Carlos Magno

A total of 98.2 percent of people visiting attractions in Jalapão are tourists and only 1.8% is residents of Mateiros. In relation to the national average, Sao Paulo is the state that brings more tourists to this roadmap, with an average of 12.7%, followed by Brasilia, with 7.3%. This information was disclosed by another stage of the research “Profile of the Tourist Demand of Jalapão”, held on September 5, 6 and 7 of this year.

The research is an initiative of ADTUR - Tourist Development Agency of the State of Tocantins and focused on three main attractions: the Dunes, the Fervedouro and the Cachoeira do Formiga Waterfall. The locations were chosen as reference points for applying the questionnaires. In all, 56 people were interviewed.

The city that sent more tourists to Jalapão was Palmas/TO, with (60%), followed by Gurupi/TO (9.1%), thus showing the involvement of regional tourism. From the total numbers of tourists that traveled to Jalapão, 56.4% were male and 43.6% female. 70.9% of the tourists interviewed said the attractions of Jalapão were the reason for deciding on the trip.

The Research “Profile of the Tourist Demand” has several stages over the year, which occurs at different times. On September 5, 6, and 7, a stage was also held in the city of Lagoa da Confusão. On September 18 to 21, the questionnaires were taken at the Entrepreneur Fair in Palmas.

Already on the 26th, the questionnaires were applied at the airport and bus station of the capital. On October 8,9,10 and 11 the polling was done in Araguaina at the 1st - Exhibition of Commercial Hub of Araguaina. The data from these steps are being formatted by ADTUR.

Also in September, Adtur held lectures on tourist routes of Tocantins at the city of Gurupi. The seminar contributed significantly to the increase of tourists from Gurupi County to Jalapão.

Next steps

By the end of this year, ADTUR will have finished the other stages of this research. The next stage will be in November, at the Veu da Noiva Waterfall, 30 km from Araguaina, and at the airport and bus station at Palmas in the month of December. This research will enable an annual review of the tourism demand of Tocantins in 2008.
